Satellite-tagged Panni conquered the northwestern part of the Carpathian Basin

Panni the satellite-tagged Imperial Eagle has visited 12 countries already. She was born in Heves County in 2011 and has become famous after having been robbed from the nest at the age of a few days. She has been wandering around the borderland of Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary since June.

She will be expected to establish nesting territory between 2013 and 2015 and experts from MME are very excited to see whether she will choose this region or will settle down somewhere else. There are plans to build a wind park on the eastern part of Hungary, which would imperil the habitat of the Imperial Eagles and other species, as well.

Panni’s tracks so far

Panni has provided the greatest number of signals of all the Imperial Eagles having fitted with transmitters. Her transmitter recorded 2560 GPS coordinates, which is an invaluable help in saving the species. The average flying altitude was around 470m MASL, but she even reached 2530m MASL, while crossing the ridges of the Carpathian Mountains.

Panni was recovered in an adventurous event and put back in a nest in the Jászság area by experts from the Hortobágyi National Park and MME at the age of 4 weeks. A month later she was fitted with a satellite transmitter along with her sibling and a half-sister. Unfortunately, they weren’t as lucky as Panni was. Tiszavirág, Panni’s robbed and sold sibling died from unknown reason shortly after fledging. Her body was found some 30 meters from the nest. Bobák the only original nestling of the pair used for the repatriation of Panni and Tiszavirág wandered around the southern part of Hungary but also Serbia and Romania. Bobák was poisoned 2 kilometres from the Romanian border in Békés County in January.
