The 1st Eagle Day in the Imperial Eagle Visitor Centre was a success

Associates of MME and Hortobágyi National Park received 160 guests altogether on the 1st Eagle Day on January 17th, 2015. The event was held in the newly built Eagle Centre near Jászberény.

The open-day organised by HELICON’S project staff served several aims. We could offer a new core site for the 12th National Eagle Census, tested how the Centre functioned before its official handover ceremony, also surveyed the general public’s interest and gathered information on how to improve the Eagle Centre in the future.

Up to 160 people came from the Jászság and other parts of the country confirming the importance of what we are doing. People are interested in such open-days, when they have get a glimpse of a nature conservation or a research project, and also meet those project associates who were only known from photos or from the television or just heard on the radio previously.

It is also important that from now on, the Eagle Day will increase the visibility and recognition of the National Eagle Census, which is inevitable to reach the HELICON project’s goals to protect birds of prey.

Here come a few photos of the event!

We were already in the Eagle Centre when the sun came up, …

… We started the preparation for the open-day. We placed the poster of HELICON Life
programme and …

… informational brochures.

Building the Bird Cake Baking Tent as part of the Eagle Heptathlon.

We also showcased the HELICON nature trail informational tables …

We organised two sites to present the tools used in bird and raptor protection,
one was outdoors …

… and the other one was in the Eagle Centre.

Meantime, we prepared lots of …

… sandwiches.

We put the reception desk outside, right in front of the main entrance since the weather
was unusually mild.

The parking lot is almost filled up, visitors are arriving.

The bird cake making was led by Ildikó Komondi (centre), colleague of the
Jászberény Zoo project partner of the HELICON.
